This limited edition fountain pen was created at the request of Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale, commonly known as Nord/LB. Unique to Germany, the Landesbanken are regionally organized, state-owned institutions primarily focused on wholesale banking. Nord/LB, based in Hannover, was once ranked among Germany’s top ten banks and within the world’s top 100 financial institutions. As of 2016, it reported an annual income of $2.3 billion and held total assets of approximately $205 billion.
Founded in 1765 as the Braunschweigische Staatsbank, Nord/LB adopted its current name in 1970 following the merger of four predecessor banks. Today, it remains a public corporation jointly owned by the German federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The bank’s operations span investment banking, corporate finance, agricultural and real estate lending, as well as ship and aircraft financing.
In 1995, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its founding, Nord/LB commissioned Pelikan to produce a special Limited Edition Souverän M800 fountain pen as a gift for its employees. This exclusive edition was never released to the public, making it one of the more elusive and desirable pieces among Pelikan collectors. Based on the limited edition card, only 6920 pieces were produced. Over the years, only a handful of examples have surfaced on the secondary market, each representing a fascinating blend of corporate history and fine German craftsmanship.
This Pelikan M800 features gold-plated trim. The cap banding is stamped with, "25 JAHRE NORD/LB GERMANY." The top of the cap proudly displays the "PELIKAN 2-chick Logo." This pen measures 5 1/2" capped, 6 3/8" posted, and weighs 1.00 ounces, offering a balanced feel for writing or display.
Mechanically, the brass piston filler operates flawlessly, tested and confirmed with water. The 14K gold nib, stamped with, “Pelikan Logo 14K/585 M,” measures approximately .79mm, which falls in the Medium point designation. This pen has never been inked or dipped, preserved in mint condition for the next collector.
