Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Hand polished the Sterling Silver Waterman Clip-Cap Clip, Sterling Cap, Sterling Barrel and Waterman 14K #5 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in what is known as the Trefoil pattern. This pattern was in production from 1907 to circa 1923. The Sterling Silver overlay is gorgeous displaying a beautiful Art Nouveau look. The Sterling Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap displays display absolutely no wear. The Cap is a slip-on type that secures to the barrel - there are a couple of shallow dings on the top dome of the cap. All Sterling Silver overlay has been polished to shine brightly. The barrel is stamped, "WATERMAN'S IDEAL FOUNTAIN PEN" which this imprint helps to date the fountain pen to around 1910. The butt end of the fountain pen has imprint model number "15". There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #15 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 7" posted.
This Waterman Fountain Pen is an Eyedropper Fill type. The section unscrews and one fills the barrel with ink and attaches the section back to the barrel for use. It is a simple designed filling system and works as it should with ink.
This Waterman has a fantastic #5 WATERMAN Manifold Nib that writes very smoothly. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .88mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine to medium line measuring roughly .56mm on the horizontal strokes to .89mm when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
These larger model Waterman Fountain Pens overlays are extremely difficult to find especially in Sterling. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to easily grade in Very Fine condition. This fountain pen is one that very few people will be able to say they have in the fine writing instrument stable.
