Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned the outside of the barrel with mineral oil and the hard rubber displays a real deep black color.
This fountain pen is made from black chased hard rubber. The barrel has great crisp imprints at the center that read, "PAT'D 1884 MAY 23 1899 WATERMAN'S FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. U.S.A. PAT'D MAY 23, 1899 & AUG 3, 1904 U.S.A". The butt end of the fountain pen has a very crisp 12 imprint. The cap is a slip type cap always securing tightly with a Nickel Plated IDEAL Clip-Cap. There are no monograms on the barrel. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #12 measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 6 7/8" posted.
The NIB is an awesome flexible Waterman 14K New York IDEAL #2. The actual tip of the Waterman 14K NIB measures .99mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring .46mm, on the horizontal stroke, with very light pressure and flexes up to 1.95mm with normal to medium pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This is an excellent example of an antique Waterman #12 Black Chased Hard Rubber Eye Dropper Fountain Pen. I would consider this Waterman 12 to easily grade in Excellent Condition. It is ready to write or just add to your writing arsenal collection
