For your consideration, we are exceptionally proud to offer for sale this Restored Circa 1952 Montblanc 149 Masterpiece Fountain Pen with the highly coveted Silver Ring cap configuration, fitted with an original and remarkably desirable 14C/585 Tri-Color Kugel Medium nib. Among vintage Montblanc collectors, early silver-ring 149s are widely regarded as the pinnacle of post-war Montblanc production and are often referred to as the true “Holy Grail” examples within the 149 lineage.
This fountain pen has been professionally disassembled, internally cleaned, carefully restored, and reassembled to proper operating standards. It is now fully functional and writing beautifully while still preserving the integrity and character expected of an important vintage collector’s piece.
This early-production 149 retains all of the defining characteristics serious collectors look for, including the flat ebonite feed, and the highly desirable telescopic piston filling system without threaded filler unit construction. The cap features the iconic early configuration of two thin sterling silver rings surrounding a center gold-filled cap band, placing production within the highly collectible early-to-mid 1950s era (1952 to 1955 with this configuration - 1952 was the first year these came out for sale). Pens of this configuration are increasingly difficult to locate, especially in such complete and well-preserved condition.
The cap and barrel remain in magnificent condition with no cracks, chips, teeth marks, or repairs. The cap threads securely to the barrel, it is very tight fit. The gold-filled clip and cap trim remain exceptionally well preserved with no brassing whatsoever, maintaining a rich and elegant appearance throughout. The center cap band is crisply stamped “MONTBLANC MASTERPIECE” while the blind cap is properly stamped “149.”
Particularly noteworthy is the beautifully preserved celluloid ink-view window, displaying the desirable linear horizontal striations associated with early 149 production. The transparency remains excellent with only gentle ambering consistent with age. There are no monograms or personal engravings present on either the cap or barrel.
The pen measures approximately 5 5/8" inches capped, 6 1/2" inches posted, and weighs 1.10 ounces, giving it the commanding yet balanced feel that established the Montblanc 149 as the flagship model.
The telescopic piston filling mechanism has been restored to original operating standards and functions smoothly and effortlessly as intended. It has been tested with water to ensure proper filling and expulsion. The blind cap is additionally stamped “KM” denoting the coveted Kugel Medium nib designation, alongside the “149” model imprint.
Most importantly, this example retains its original and increasingly scarce 14C/585 Tri-Color Kugel nib, one of the most sought-after nib variations ever fitted to the Montblanc 149. The Kugel nib, identifiable by its rounded tipping profile, has earned near-legendary status among vintage Montblanc enthusiasts for its uniquely smooth, forgiving, and expressive writing characteristics. These nibs glide effortlessly across paper while still offering the soft, responsive feel and moderate flexibility collectors desire in early Meisterstück fountain pens.
Measured with digital calipers, the nib tipping measures approximately .85mm, placing it within the true Medium range. In actual writing performance, the nib produces a medium line under normal pressure and opens beautifully to a double broad/triple broad stroke with moderate to firm pressure. The included writing sample demonstrates a medium stroke measuring approximately .74mm and expanded strokes measuring approximately 1.78mm. The writing experience is exceptionally smooth, controlled, and expressive—everything collectors hope to find in an early Kugel-equipped 149.
Original silver-ring Montblanc 149s fitted with authentic Kugel nibs have become extraordinarily difficult to acquire, particularly examples that remain structurally sound, mechanically functional, and free from significant condition issues. The combination of the silver ring cap configuration, telescopic filler, grooved ebonite feed, tri-color Kugel nib, and excellent preservation firmly places this fountain pen among the most desirable vintage Montblanc 149 variants ever produced.
We would conservatively grade this extraordinary writing instrument in Very Fine to Very Fine+ condition, though its rarity and collector significance extend far beyond traditional condition grading alone.
An exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the most revered and historically important Montblanc fountain pens ever produced—equally deserving of use, admiration, or placement within an advanced vintage writing instrument collection.
