Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this very rare 1990s Tibaldi Bononia Celluloid Fountain Pen fitted with an 18K Medium Nib. This fountain pen comes with the original Bononia Literature. I have dipped the fountain pen to provide a writing sample and the pen is what I consider to be in Mint condition and functions perfectly.

NOTE: This Tibaldi Bononia is scarce due to its being a Bologna-manufactured fountain pen. This was manufactured before the trademark was sold to Montegrappa (Aquila Family). I have to mention the celluloid on this pen is stunning and in perfect condition.

The Bononia consists of a single-piece barrel in black mother-of-pearl celluloid with green and gold reflections. The three gold-plated cap band rings and "tie-shaped" clip in hot minted gold, which has always distinguished all Tibaldi creations, are made from 3-micron thick 24-carat gold-plated brass.

The Tibaldi Bononia celluloid Fountain Pen had a production of just 500 pens based on the literature but around 250 were actually manufactured based on sources that were close to the company. This particular fountain pen is numbered "094" on the lower portion of the barrel. The cap and barrel are in perfect condition with no cracks, nicks, scratches, or repairs. The cap is always securing tightly to the barrel. The 3-ring cap bands are securely in place and the "tie-shaped" clip displays no wear and is polished brightly. This fountain pen measures 5 1/2" capped and 6 1/8" posted.

The Tibaldi Bononia Fountain Pen comes fitted with an 18K/750 medium nib. I dipped the nib in Montblanc Blue-Black ink to perform a writing sample that you see in the images. The nib is designated a medium and stamped, "M" on the shoulder of the right tine area. The iridium tipping measures .82mm when measured with a digital caliper. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The nib will range from a medium (.64mm) to a broad (1.09mm) line variation when measuring with digital calipers.

This Tibaldi Bononia fountain pen uses a piston filling system and I have tested it with water and works as it was designed to.

The fountain pen comes with the documentation however there is no box.

The Tibaldi Bononia is the final model produced by the Bologna-based Tibaldi company before the historic trademark was sold to the Aquila family (Montegrappa), leading to the relocation of production from Bologna. The name "Bononia" is derived from the Latin name for the city of Bologna. This pen is a tribute to Bologna, the birthplace of Mr. G. Tibaldi and the origin of Tibaldi pens, which began production in the early 1900s. According to the original manufacturing literature, 500 Bononia pens were expected to be produced; however, production was halted early, and likely only around 250 pens were actually manufactured. The Bononia departs from the style and principles of other Tibaldi models from the 1990s, which were inspired by vintage designs from the 1930s. This pen was designed as a modern filling instrument, aiming to provide an exceptional writing experience. The threads are positioned high at the end of the barrel to keep the body of the pen free from obstruction, enhancing comfort while writing. Its shape embodies balance and simplicity, representing the pinnacle of elegance.

The Tibaldo Bononia is very desirable due to the design being the last model manufactured by the Bologna-based Tibaldi company. I would condition this Tibaldi Bononia Limited Edtion Fountain Pen to grade in Mint Condition. This Tibaldi Bononia would be one of the highlighted fountain pens in one's writing arsenal collection and a rare example that most never will have a chance to own.
