For your consideration, we are pleased to offer for sale this elegant Circa 1999 Waterman Carène Fountain Pen in the highly desirable Marine Amber finish with gold-plated trim, fitted with an 18K Medium nib. This exceptional example is presented in Mint, New Old Stock, Never Inked condition and includes the original Waterman presentation box.
Introduced in the 1990s, the Waterman Carène quickly established itself as one of Waterman's most recognizable modern designs. Inspired by the graceful hulls of luxury yachts, the Carène—French for “hull”—features flowing, streamlined contours that seamlessly blend contemporary design with timeless French elegance. Today, it remains one of Waterman's flagship writing instruments and one of the most sophisticated modern fountain pens ever produced.
This particular example is finished in the beautiful Marine Amber lacquer, a rich amber-gold finish that exhibits remarkable depth and luminosity as light dances across its surface. The warm amber tones pair wonderfully with the 23K gold-plated trim, creating an appearance that is both luxurious and refined. The name Marine Amber itself feels perfectly suited to the Carène's nautical inspiration.
The cap and barrel are constructed from lacquered brass and remain in flawless condition with no chips, cracks, dents, dings, scratches, or repairs. The gold-plated trim remains bright and vibrant throughout. The cap secures firmly to the barrel via a friction fit. The cap band is stamped “WATERMAN FRANCE,” and there are no monograms or personal engravings present.
This Waterman Carène measures approximately 5 3/4 inches capped, 5 7/8 inches posted, and weighs 1.20 ounces, offering exceptional balance and a substantial yet comfortable feel in hand.
The fountain pen utilizes Waterman's cartridge/converter filling system and includes the original converter and one ink cartridge, allowing the flexibility of both bottled ink and Waterman cartridges.
Fitted with an integrated 18K/750 solid gold Medium nib, the tipping measures approximately .68mm when checked with digital calipers. The backside of the section is stamped, "M" for medium, as well. One of the defining characteristics of the Carène is its beautifully integrated nib design, which appears to emerge directly from the section and further reinforces the yacht-inspired aesthetic. In keeping with its collector-grade status, the nib has never been inked or dipped, preserving its untouched condition for the next owner.
The original Waterman presentation box and literature accompanies the pen and remains in excellent condition.
Today, the Waterman Carène continues to attract collectors and writers alike for its elegant French styling, exceptional ergonomics, and unique integrated nib design. Finding examples in true New Old Stock, Never Inked condition has become increasingly difficult, particularly in desirable finishes such as Marine Amber.
An exceptional opportunity to acquire one of Waterman's most iconic modern fountain pens—combining French sophistication, luxurious materials, and untouched collector-grade preservation into a writing instrument equally suited for display or future enjoyment.
