Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Gorgeous Restored Circa 1925 Waterman #55 Cardinal Red Hard Rubber Thimble Top Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in wonderful writing condition. This is a Fantastic and scarce Thimble Top example of a Cardinal #55 from Waterman!

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned - the inside of the cap is amazingly clean. I have cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Cap Banding, Gold Filled Waterman Clip-Cap Clip, Gold Filled Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #5 Flex NIB.

This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in the Cardinal Red color with no cracks which are almost impossible to find. The coloring is gorgeous displaying consistent red coloring. The lever is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen by the naked eye. The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap displays beautifully with some very light wear around the rivet area. The gold-filled cap banding is perfect with no wear. The Thimble top does have some minor wear. All 18K Gold Filled trim has been polished to shine brightly again. This Waterman 55 barrel has a crisp and clean imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. IDEAL GLOBE PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN". The butt end of the fountain pen has a crisp number "55" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #55 measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 6 7/8" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.

This Waterman has an absolutely buttery smooth #5 WATERMAN Flex IDEAL Nib that is fabulous to write with. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring 1.05mm when measured with digital calipers - a Broad nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .52mm on the horizontal strokes and will flex to 2.51mm on the vertical strokes when measured with digital calipers under firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

This antique Waterman #55 Cardinal Red Hard Rubber Fountain Pen is a very scarce example to find with the thimble cap and clean. These examples do not come to market very often. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Excellent+ condition - the minor wear of the gold-filled material on the thimble cap top is really the only minor challenge. This is a Collector and Writers' dream pen in terms of condition and how smoothly it writes.
