Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa Early 1970s Sheaffer Imperial Model 556 Fountain Pen in the Burgundy color with a Gold Plated Fine Inlay nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful operating and writing condition.

This fountain pen cap and barrel are in magnificent condition with no chips, cracks, teeth marks or repairs with the cap always securing to the barrel. The cap has the Gold Filled Clip and Wide Gold Filled Cap Banding that display in perfect condition. The barrel is stamped, "SHEAFFER'S - MADE IN U.S.A.". There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. There is no brassing or wear to the gold-filled clip and cap banding. This Sheaffer Imperial Model 556 Fountain Pen measures 5 1/8" in length capped and 5 3/4" posted.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, section, and feed. Hand polished the Cap Clip, Cap Banding, and Gold Plated Nib. The Sheaffer White Dot is securely attached in the clip. I have cleaned, buffed, and polished the barrel and cap to bring back the vibrancy and to protect the material of the fountain pen. This Sheaffer Pen has been disassembled, cleaned, and inspected for any defects before reassembling. This Sheaffer Imperial uses either ink cartridges or ink converter, I have included the ink converter, and the filling system works as originally intended to.

The difference between a Sheafer 550 model and 556 is the nib. The 550 model has a 14K nib and the 556 has the gold plated nib, which this is. The Sheaffer Inlaid Nib has a fine point measuring roughly .48mm when measuring with digital calipers. In the writing sample provided, the NIB writes with a fine line that measures roughly .43mm to .46mm when measuring with digital calipers. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

These Sheaffer Imperial Fountain Pens are becoming more and more collectible. Collectors love the Inlay nibs and these pens are steady workhorses for writing long periods. This Sheaffer Imperial Model 556 is in ready to write condition or just add to writing arsenal collection. I would consider this Sheaffer Snorkel Set to easily grade in Excellent Condition.
