For your consideration, we are pleased to offer for sale this exceptional restored circa 1927 Waterman #54 Red Ripple Hard Rubber Fountain Pen fitted with its highly desirable original 14K Ideal #4 Flex nib. This is one of the finest examples of a Waterman #54 you are likely to encounter—fully restored, writing beautifully, and preserved in true collector-grade Mint condition.
The Waterman #54 has long been one of the most sought-after models among vintage fountain pen collectors, particularly in the iconic Red Ripple hard rubber finish. While it shares the same overall body size as the popular #52, the #54 was fitted with the larger #4 nib, making correct surviving examples far less common and significantly more desirable. Finding one with its original #4 flex nib, strong color, and this level of preservation is extraordinarily difficult today. Quite simply, this pen is “rare as hen’s teeth.”
This example is in remarkable Mint condition—an astonishing state for a pen approaching 100 years old. The Red Ripple hard rubber retains outstanding color vibrancy, with deep, rich reds contrasted by dramatic black ripples that remain bold and unfaded. The hard rubber has excellent surface preservation with no notable wear, and the overall appearance suggests a pen that saw very little use during its lifetime.
The 18K gold-filled trim is equally impressive. The cap band, Waterman clip, lever box assembly, and trim all remain bright and crisp with no plating wear whatsoever—something almost never seen on a pen of this age. The lever retains a sharp “IDEAL” imprint, and the overall presentation is exceptionally clean.
The barrel imprint remains deep, bold, and fully legible, reading: “WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN,” while the butt end carries a strong, clear “54” stamp. There are no monograms or personal engravings. The threads are excellent, allowing the cap to secure tightly and properly. The pen measures 5 3/8" capped and an impressive 6 5/8" posted.
This pen has been fully disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, carefully restored, and properly reassembled. The nib, feed, and section were thoroughly cleaned, the cap and barrel were hand polished to enhance the richness of the Red Ripple ebonite, and a new latex sac has been installed for reliable filling and long-term use. The lever box assembly was cleaned, lubricated, and water tested, and the filling system now works exactly as originally intended.
The true highlight of this pen is the superb WATERMAN IDEAL 14K #4 Flex nib—one of the most collectible and expressive nibs Waterman ever produced. The tipping remains in excellent condition, measuring approximately .74 mm with digital calipers, placing it in the Medium range.
In actual writing, the nib lays down a smooth medium line of approximately .63 mm under light pressure and opens effortlessly to a dramatic 1.82 mm triple broad under medium to firm pressure. It offers excellent flexibility, beautiful line variation, smooth transitions, and that unmistakable soft, buttery Waterman feel collectors chase. The writing sample shown was created using this exact pen dipped in Faber-Castell Cobalt Blue ink.
This Waterman #54 Red Ripple is the kind of pen that rarely surfaces in today’s market—superb color, flawless trim, strong factory imprints, and a truly outstanding flex nib, all preserved in Mint condition. I rarely use that grade on vintage pens, but this is absolutely one that deserves it.
Whether destined for daily writing, a serious vintage collection, or as a long-term collectible store of value, this Waterman #54 stands as a true time capsule and one of the finest examples available.
