Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this rare Parker 61 Prototype Die-Cut 61 Tassie and Vent Hole Nib Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been flushed, cleaned, buffed, polished, and is in great writing condition.

This is a circa 1956 Parker 61 Prototype “Wick-fill” in black with a Lustraloy cap and gold-filled trim. These prototypes were first introduced in 1954 and creased around 1956. It has a brushed Lustraloy (stainless steel) cap with a gold fill clip and barrel tassie. The cap design is unique to 61 prototypes. There is a die-cut “61” inlaid in the barrel tassie. To fill the pen with ink, the barrel end is put into the ink, and the wick draws ink into the barrel through the cut-out “61.” The pen has a hooded nib, which is larger than the regular 61 nib, and also features a die-cut “61” acting as the vent hole for the ink/air exchange while using the pen.

This fountain pen cap is in great condition with no dings, dents, or repairs. The cap is unique to this prototype and does not show up on other Parker 61s so it is not interchangeable. There is a gold ring around the peralized top cap jewel and another stainless trim ring that covers the clip. The cap lip is stamped with, "PARKER MADE IN U.S.A." There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. This Parker 61 measures 5 1/8" in length capped and 5 3/8" posted.

This Parker 61 is fitted with a 14K gold fine nib and the underside of the nib has the "61 die-cut" vent hole. The actual writing portion (iridium tip) of the 14K Parker NIB has a fine point measuring roughly .55mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing a sample with this NIB, it writes with a fine stroke/line. In the writing sample provided, the line variation measures between .50mm to .56mm line variation when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Blue Ink.

This Parker 61 has a wick-fill filling system that has been used. I have cleaned/flushed it with water. It is nearly impossible to clean it free of ink due to the nature of the filling system but it is flushed very well.

This Parker 61 is a very scarce fountain pen due to the die-cut 61 vent hole and tassie.  These rarely show up for sale and are part of the charm and history of the Parker 61 line-up. I would grade the fountain pen to be in Excellent condition and certainly a hard Parker 61 prototype to add to one's collection.
