Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this spectacular 1914 Waterman Sterling Silver Hand Engraved Overlay Fountain Pen made for the British market. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in splendid writing condition.

NOTE: This Waterman is made for the British market and does not have the typical model number on the end of the barrel like most Waterman's do. The fountain pens were imported from the US the overlay was added in the UK and the model number, in the majority of cases, were removed. That said, the size that it would be in the USA numbering system would have been 402. Lastly, the pattern on the overlay is not known, at least by me and not found in any of the Waterman catalogs I have access to. It is hand-engraved with a tremendous amount of fine detail. I have never seen one like this before and probably have a hard time ever seeing one like this ever again.

I have hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. I cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel and Waterman 14K #2 New York nib.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with an ornate chased sterling silver overlay with the lower end covered. Again, there is no model number stamped on the barrel end - but would be considered a #402 if it were made in the USA. The sterling overlay pattern is clean as can be with no wear of the sterling material and the chasing is clean and crisp. The straight cap is a friction fit type and secures tightly to the section/barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on either the cap or barrel cartouche. There are no cracks, dings, dents, or repairs to the hard rubber or sterling overlay. This Waterman measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 6 1/2" posted.

The Waterman Cap is hallmarked with British assay marks - 1) the Lion's Head for being made in London, and, 2) the standing lion for sterling.

The barrel is hallmarked with British assay marks - 1) the Lion's Head for being made in London, 2) the standing lion for sterling, 3) lowercase t is the 1914 date code, and, 4) F.D.W. or Frank D. Waterman's export hallmark. The covered end of the barrel is stamped with, "WATERMAN'S IDEAL GLOBE LOGO FOUNTAIN PEN".

This Waterman Taper Cap Fountain Pen is an Eyedropper Fill type. I have tested the filling system with ink and works as it was originally intended to with no leaks.

This Waterman has a fantastic #2 WATERMAN IDEAL NEW YORK Full-Flex Nib. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .77mm when measured with digital calipers or a medium point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium line measuring roughly .64mm with light pressure and flexes to a triple broad stroke of 2.29mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

This Waterman Sterling Chased Straight Cap Fountain Pen is a functional work of art. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Excellent condition. If you are a collector of these types of Straight Cap Fountain Pens from Waterman this is probably one few have ever seen. It is a marvelous example and would be one of the jewels in anyone's writing arsenal collection!
