Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1928 Carter's Oversize Flat Top Fountain Pen Model #2117 in the Polished Black celluloid fitted with a 14K Broad nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, ultrasonically cleaned, put back together, and is now in wonderful writing condition.

This Carter's Fountain Pen is a bit unusual due to the cap having a 2-ring cap band and a top cap band for a total of 3 cap bands - this configuration is a bit uncommon.

I have hand-cleaned the nib, feed, and section. I replaced the latex sac with a new properly sized latex sac. I have hand-polished the gold-filled Carter's rocker clip, lever arm, 2-ring barrel banding, and upper cap banding. I cleaned, buffed, and polished the barrel and cap to bring back the vibrancy and to protect the celluloid of the fountain pen. This Carter's Fountain Pen is an Oversize model that measures 5 5/16" inches capped and 6 5/8" posted.

The fountain pen cap and barrel are in exceptional condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. This Polished Black color is a jet black color and displays nearly like the day it left the factory! The rocker clip on the cap displays brightly but does display some minor gold fill wear. The total of 3 rings on the Cap displays brightly as well, again with some gold-filled wear. The gold-filled lever is fairly clean and the gold-filled material has been polished to shine brightly but we have a small wear area at the end of the lever. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel.

The barrel has a clean imprint that reads, "CARTER'S PATENTED THE CARTER'S INK CO BOSTON-NEW YORK-CHICAGO". The end of the barrel is stamped with the model number, "2117 and a Star".

I have tested the lever-filling mechanism with water and fills as it should. The filling unit operates as it was originally intended to and smoothly.

This Carter's Superwear has an enormous 14K Nib and it generates a great writing experience. The actual writing portion of the 14K Carter NIB has a broad point measuring roughly .96mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing a sample with this NIB, it writes with a Medium to Broad stroke/line. In the writing sample provided, the medium line measures .61mm, and the broad measures 1.14mm when measured with digital calipers. The Carter Nib writes fairly smoothly, it is a real pleasure to write with. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Carter was a well-known maker of fountain pen ink, but made fountain pens only for a few years, from the mid-1920s to around circa 1937. It offered very high-quality pens, highly sought today by those who want top-tier pens by small makers.

This vintage Carter's Fountain Pen is a fairly clean example in the Oversize Black Polished celluloid. I would consider this Carter to easily grade in Very Fine to Very Fine+ Condition. It is a collector grade that one will rarely find the opportunity to own. It is ready to write or just add it to your writing arsenal collection!
