This example has never been inked, remains in Mint condition, and comes complete with all original Montblanc packaging and documentation, including inner and outer boxes, Great Characters literature, service guide, and pen sleeve.
Few literary works have defined an era as vividly as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Published in 1925, the novel immortalized the glamour and illusion of the Roaring Twenties — an age of jazz, wealth, and unfulfilled longing. Against the glittering skyline of New York City and the grand mansions of Long Island, the story of Jay Gatsby captures both the beauty and the fragility of the American Dream.
Drawing inspiration from this timeless world of elegance and ambition, the Great Characters Homage to The Great Gatsby Special Edition fountain pen embodies the spirit of Art Deco refinement. Its barrel, produced using a specialized technique, reflects the luminous facades of Manhattan’s skyscrapers by night. The cap is crowned with a fluorescent Montblanc emblem that absorbs light by day and softly glows in the dark (see image 7) — a poetic tribute to the green light across Daisy Buchanan’s dock, the enduring symbol of hope that defines the novel.
The platinum-coated clip takes the form of a classic money clip, representing the irresistible power of wealth, and is adorned with Jay Gatsby’s gold-coated Art Deco monogram. The cone, reminiscent of 1920s engraved hip flasks, is finished with fine rings in the colors of the American flag — an understated nod to the allure and mythology of the American Dream.
Removing the cap reveals the pen’s centerpiece: a finely engraved 14K (Au585) rhodium-coated gold nib, depicting Gatsby’s luxurious automobile, described by Fitzgerald as “a rich cream color, bright with nickel... and terraced with a labyrinth of windshields that mirrored a dozen suns.” Every design element is a masterful homage to the decadence and aspirations of the Jazz Age.
The cap and barrel are flawless, free of cracks, nicks, or repairs, and the cap threads securely to the barrel. The fountain pen measures 5 3/4" inches capped, 6 3/4" inches posted, and weighs 2.13 ounces. The serial number “MFJQ5PN65” is stamped on the clip ring, as shown in photo 8, and guaranteed to be an authentic Montblanc!
This pen features a smooth piston filling system, which has been carefully tested with water to ensure proper function. The interior of the barrel was inspected as was the piston mechanism, I lightly greased the piston unit for optimal, smooth performance. There were no traces of ink, confirming its never-inked condition.
The 14K Medium nib, marked “4810, 14K/Au585, Montblanc, 2024”, measures approximately .74 mm with digital calipers. To maintain its pristine status, the nib has not been dipped or filled.
Complete with its original Montblanc inner and outer boxes, Limited Edition documentation, service literature, and protective pen sleeve, this example remains in factory-fresh condition.
