Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Circa 1996 Sheaffer Grand Connaisseur Fountain Pen in a Fluted Sterling Silver design with 18K Medium nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart to be internally cleaned, put back together, and is now back in writing condition.

This is Sheaffer model 823, better known as the luxurious Grand Connaisseur made between the years 1988 to 1996

The barrel and cap are made of Sterling Silver and display 23K gold electroplate trim. This fountain pen has absolutely no dents, chips, cracks, or repairs. The cap of this fountain pen carries the "white dot", Sheaffer's lifetime guarantee symbol. The cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. This Sheaffer Connaisseur measures 5 5/8" inches in length capped and 6 5/8" inches posted.

This Sheaffer features a 23K Gold Electroplated clip and cap banding that is imprinted with, "Sheaffer's USA". The two-tone nib is 18K solid gold with a Palladium scroll design. The nib is designated a Medium point, .78mm when I measured using a digital caliper. This pen can be used with ink cartridges or the accompanying ink converter as seen in the image. The gold plated trim does show wear on certain areas like the ball of the clip, portions of the cap band, and on the top of the cap and bottom of the barrel trim rings.  This fountain pen can use ink cartridges or an ink converter. The ink converter has been tested with water and works as it was designed to.

The Sheaffer Nib is marked 18K Sheaffer 750 Made in USA and has a Medium point measuring .76mm when measuring with digital calipers. When writing a sample with this NIB, it writes with a fine (.53mm) to broad (.95mm) line variation when measuring with digital calipers. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Blue Ink.

This lovely Sheaffer Grand Connaisseur in Sterling is the "granddaddy" of the Connaisseur line-up and is a fantastic writing instrument. I would grade the fountain pen in Very Fine condition due to some areas of the gold plate showing some wear.  I am pricing it accordingly - if it were mint, it would be a $700 to $800 fountain pen. It is ready to write with or add to your writing arsenal collection. Certainly, this is a pen that you can cherish and pass down from generation to generation.
