Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Uncommon Restored Circa 1914 Waterman #412 POC Black Hard Rubber with Sterling Silver Trefoil Overlay Eyedropper Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in wonderful writing condition.

NOTE: The sterling overlay is known as a Trefoil pattern. The side opposite of the cartouche (as seen in the third image) some say is a "coin filler" overlay without the slot for the coin filler. Looking internally inside the barrel I do not see any slot. This pen was acquired in a collection as found. I never made any modifications to this pen and believe the overlay could have been a closeout by Waterman. Or the overlay just has an over-pronounced teardrop which I have seen on Gary Leher's images of similar 412 POC eyedropper models. I just want to point all of this out for clarity sake.

Ultrasonically cleaned the feed and section. Hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Hand-polished the Sterling Silver Waterman Cap, Sterling Barrel, and Waterman 14K #2 NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in what is known as the Trefoil vine pattern. This pattern was in production from 1907 to circa 1923 and the 412 POC model was first introduced in 1914. We can date this pen between 1914 and 1917 due to the Waterman numbering system. The Sterling Silver overlay is gorgeous displaying a beautiful Art Nouveau look. The Cap is a screw-on type that secures to the barrel. Notice the barrel has raised threads. All Sterling Silver overlay has been polished to shine brightly. The cap and barrel are stamped, "WATERMAN'S IDEAL FOUNTAIN PEN STERLING". The butt end of the fountain pen imprint has all but worn away and can only be seen in the proper lighting but is stamped, "412 POC". There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel cartouche. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman 5 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.

This Waterman Fountain Pen is an Eyedropper Fill type. The barrel is unusual on this pen as there are no threads on the inside of the barrel when you remove the section which is done by pulling the section from the barrel. Typically, I see threads on the barrel internally with a section being threaded. This particular pen does not display this. The section pulls out and one fills the barrel with ink and pushing the section back into the barrel for use. The pen performs great when writing with no leaks in my tests.

This Waterman has a #2 WATERMAN Semi-Flexible Nib that writes great. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .92mm when measured with digital calipers - a broad nib point. When writing the sample shown in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine to broad line. The fine line measures roughly .56mm and flexes to a broad 1.64mm line with firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Montblanc Blue Ink.

I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to easily grade in Very Fine to Excellent condition. It is a gorgeous pen and a great writer!
