Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Gorgeous Restored circa 1923 Waterman #56 Red Woodgrain Hard Rubber Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and now is in excellent writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. I have hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Cap Banding, Gold Filled Waterman Clip, Lever Box Assembly, along with the Waterman 14K #6 NIB.

This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in a Red Woodgrain pattern. The coloring is gorgeous displaying consistent red and black coloring on both the cap and barrel.  The lever has a touch of wear on the arm and globe area. The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap displays a touch of wear at the high point on the ball of the clip. The gold-filled cap banding is starting to show a hint of wear along the very top edge of the banding - overall in very good condition. The barrel has an imprint at the center of the barrel that is light and reads, "PAT'D 1884 MAY 23 1899 WATERMAN'S IDEAL GLOBE LOGO FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. U.S.A. & AUG 4, 1903 U.S.A". The butt end of the fountain pen has the number/model "56" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #56 measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 7" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.

This Waterman has a #6 Manifold Nib Made in the USA. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .91mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium/broad nib. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium line measuring roughly between .71mm to .84mm when measured with digital calipers. The nib is stiff but that is what a Manifold nib is however it does write very smoothly. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Namiki Black Ink.

The Waterman 56s are increasingly difficult to acquire with Woodgrain patterns being less common than the Red Ripples. This antique Waterman #56 Red Woodgrain Fountain Pen is in ready-to-write condition using the smooth writing nib. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in very fine to excellent condition and certainly a collector-grade writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection.
