Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1923 Waterman 452 1/2 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized, silicone sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #2 Flexible NIB.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. The barrel end has a fairly clear imprint that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN USA". The butt end of the fountain pen has the 452 1/2 imprint.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There is a monogram on the barrel cartouche area that appears to have the initials, "GJS" in old script. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber barrel. The sterling overlay looks beautiful, with some light scratching that commensurates with the age of the pen. This Waterman 452 1/2 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted. The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever is clean and is marked "Sterling" on the backside of the globe.

The NIB is a 14K #2 Waterman Flexible NIB. This NIB writes pretty smooth and is very fun to write with. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at .93mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra fine line measuring roughly .36mm with very light pressure on the horizontal lines and flexes up to a triple broad stroke+ of approximately 2.39 with medium to firm pressure, I didn't want to overextend the NIB's capabilities. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.

Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.

This is a wonderful antique Waterman's 452 1/2 Fountain Pen that is in ready to write condition. I would grade this Waterman 452 in very fine to excellent condition. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
