Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Circa 1920s Waterman 42 Safety Fountain Pen in Italian 18KR Rolled Gold Engine Turned (Guilloche) and High Relief Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

I have hand cleaned the NIB and feed. I also hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, spiral, rod connector, turning knob, and end unit with mineral oil. This fountain pen has excellent suction after adding a fluorocarbon rubber o-ring. I have hand polished the clip, cap, and barrel along with the Ideal 14K #2 flexible nib.

This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with an 18KR rolled gold (gold-filled) Italian overlay Guilloche pattern. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep black color with no oxidation. The cap clip is stamped with, "WATERMAN'S 18KR WITH THE WATERMAN GLOBE LOGO". The butt end of the barrel end has a great imprint that reads, "42". The 18KR Rolled Gold overlay is in great condition with no wear. There are two areas to point out - there is a small area on the cap banding that show wear (see image 7) and in the lower portion of the barrel on the turning knob area there are a couple of tool marks (see image 8). The cap and barrel have a Guilloche/Engine Turned pattern that displays alternating panels of a cluster of diamond/wavey lines. The center of the barrel and cap display in high relief a Grape Vine pattern.

The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. There are no leaks from the cap or the turning knob - the barrel holds ink in this pen perfectly. This Waterman 42 measures 4 7/8" in length capped and 6 1/8" posted with the nib extended.

Here is where this safety pen starts to really become spectacular. The nib comes with a 14K #2 Flexible Nib, bordering on Wet Noodle type, Waterman NIB. When measuring the actual tipping (iridium) of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a fine point of .45mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra fine line measuring roughly .39mm with light pressure on horizontal strokes and flexes to a triple broad stroke of approximately 2.38mm with medium pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink. My definition of a wet noodle is where the tines will spread open and significantly with light pressure which this nib nearly does.

Waterman Italian Overlay Safety Fountain Pens from the 1920s are spectacular specimens to hold and write with. This 42 Safety is a real treasure for collectors. I would grade this Waterman 42 Safety Fountain Pen in Fine to Very Fine condition. A superb collector-worthy writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
