Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1927 Waterman #55 Woodgrain Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Bandless Cap. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

NOTE: This Waterman has an uncommon bandless cap. There was never a cap band on the cap lip and hence the bandless cap. Very uncommon to find them like this.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand-cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil - the inside of the cap is very clean. I have cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Waterman Clip, Gold Filled Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #5 Fully Flexible Nib.

This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in a Red & Black woodgrain pattern. The coloring is gorgeous displaying deep red and black coloring. The lever box assembly is very clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye and displays no wear. The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap Clip has been polished to shine brightly and only shows the tiniest of wear on the ball of the clip. All 18K Gold Filled trim has been polished to shine brightly. This Waterman 55 barrel has an imprint at the center which is very clean that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN". The butt end of the fountain pen has the "55" imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #55 measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 7" posted.

The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly as it was originally intended to.

This Waterman has a WATERMAN IDEAL 14K #5 long tine flexible nib. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .45mm when measured with digital calipers - a fine nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine to triple broad stroke/line variation. The fine line measures roughly .55mm with light pressure and the triple broad strokes measure 1.84mm with firm to medium pressure on the downward strokes when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Blue Ink.

This 1927 Waterman #55 Woodgrain Hard Rubber Fountain Pen has a wonderful writing nib that writers will enjoy. Additionally, the bandless cap is a great variant for collectors of Waterman looking for something different. It is a larger size fountain pen in length and girth but not a heavy pen where your hands' tire. I would consider the condition, color, trim, and nib of this fountain pen to grade in Excellent condition. This Waterman #55 Fountain Pen is in ready-to-write condition or add it to your writing arsenal.
