Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1928 Carter's Oversize Transitional Fountain Pen in this Blue Black Marbled Celluloid. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, ultrasonically cleaned, put back together, and is now in wonderful writing condition. These Oversize Transitional models are quite uncommon and desirable for the collectors that covet Carter's fountain pens.

I have cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Replaced the rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the gold-filled Carter's clip, lever arm, and 2-ring barrel banding. Cleaned, Buffed, and Polished the barrel and cap to bring back the vibrancy of the fountain pen and to protect the celluloid. This Carter's Fountain Pen is an Oversize model that measures 5 3/8" inches capped and 6 5/8" posted.

The fountain pen cap and barrel are in exceptional condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. This celluloid coloring displays black and dark blues in a marbling pattern! Don't let the upper portion of the cap discoloration fool you, it is just the black inner cap - there is no discoloration. The clip on the cap displays brightly with minor gold-filled loss on the edging. The 2-Ring Cap Banding displays brightly as well, again with very minor wear gold-filled loss. The gold-filled lever is very clean, displays bright gold-filled color, with just a hint of wear on the edging. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. The barrel has a very clean imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "CARTER'S PATENTED THE CARTER'S INK CO BOSTON - NEW YORK - CHICAGO".

I have tested the lever-filling mechanism with water and fills as it should. The filling unit operates as it was originally intended to and smoothly.

This Carter's NIB is an enormous 14K Nib and generates a very good, rigid writing experience. The actual writing portion of the 14K Carter Inx NIB has a medium point measuring roughly .64mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing a sample with this NIB, it writes with a fine to medium stroke/line. In the writing sample provided, the fine line measures at .51mm and the medium line measures .61mm when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Blue Ink.

Carter was a well-known maker of fountain pen ink, but made fountain pens only for a few years, from the mid-1920s to around the early 1930s. It offered very high-quality pens, highly sought today by those who want top-tier pens by small makers.

This vintage Carter's Fountain Pen is a very clean and scarce example of the Transitional Oversize Blue Marbled pattern. I would consider this Carter to easily grade in Very Fine to Excellent Condition. It is a collector grade that one will rarely find the opportunity to own. It is ready to write or just add it to your writing arsenal collection.
