Description

For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Circa 1922 Waterman #55 Black Chased Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Flexible Nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.

This fountain pen is made from black chased hard rubber with the hard rubber displaying a deep black coloring. The barrel has a fair to light imprint at the center that read, "PAT'D 1884 MAY 23 1899 WATERMAN'S IDEAL GLOBE LOGO FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. U.S.A. & AUG 4, 1903 U.S.A". The butt end of the fountain pen has a very crisp 55 imprint. The cap is a screw-on type cap always securing tightly to the barrel. The cap displays the Nickel IDEAL CLIP-CAP Clip and Cap Banding that has been polished to shine brightly. The barrel has the Nickel-plated Lever and Lever Box Assembly in excellent condition with the Ideal Globe lever arm displaying no wear. The chasing on the cap is near mint and very crisp while the barrel is chased but not as crisp. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or the barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the fountain pen. This Waterman #56 measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 7 1/8" posted.

I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB and feed. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, and section with mineral oil. Cleaned the outside of the cap and barrel with mineral oil.

This Waterman has a fantastic flexible #5 WATERMAN IDEAL Nib that is a pleasure to write with. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .70mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine to triple broad stroke/line variation. The fine line measures roughly .48mm with light pressure and the triple broad strokes measures at 2.30mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.

The Waterman #55 Fountain Pen has the Lever Filling system. I have restored the filling system with a new sac. I have tested the filling system with water and fills as it was originally designed to.

I would say this Waterman #55 is in Very Fine to Excellent condition. The Nib is smooth, the chasing on the cap is excellent and the barrel is good, and the deep black coloring certainly presents this Waterman very well! A great collector grade Waterman that is ready to write or just add to your writing arsenal collection.
